Reporting to the Foreman, Parks Services the Operator II position performs a wide variety of work functions within the Public Works Department. The position uses safe work practices and procedures to carry out assigned tasks and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team. The Operator II promotes the City’s commitment to diversity, inclusions and Truth and Reconciliation within the department, organization and community.
Some of the specific responsibilities of this position include:• Operation of light, medium and heavy duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner used in the maintenance of parks, trails and sidewalks for the purpose of snow removal and ice control, with light to large equipment. • Performing pre-equipment inspections and servicing of vehicles and equipment at the end of each day. • Ensure all rules and regulations pertaining to parks and open spaces are adhered to.• Basic knowledge of Urban Forestry maintenance and operations using Arbour care industry standards to assist in pruning operations.• Assist with litter control on highways, trails and buffers as well as the emptying of garbage receptacles throughout the entire City.• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and repair duties upon parks furnishings and equipment.• Cemetery interments, including the opening and closing of graves, cremations and the columbarium. In addition to this function the position may assist with the marking of graves prior to excavations. • Ensure facilities are unlocked, and/or secured in accordance to all schedules, policies and procedures.• Other duties relating to the Parks section as required.
Candidates are required to have a Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and minimum three (3) years’ experience in the safe operation of light to heavy duty equipment in the Parks field area. Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification is required and the Landscaping Certificate would be an asset. General knowledge of industry practices used in the areas of Parks service offerings and equipment operation is desired. The successful candidate will have working knowledge and experience in the safe usage of powered and hand operated tools. The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service and communication skills and the ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing. This is a physically demanding position and incumbents will be required to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions. This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. The successful candidate will be required to provide a current Driver’s Abstract at time of interview.Rate of Pay: $30.07 – $33.05 per hourHours of Work: 40 hours per week, varying shifts This is a temporary position with a tentative end date of April 20, 2024.
